The remuneration that a nanny would expect to receive differs from one position
to another, but here are some guidelines for determining a fair salary:
-
Full-time nannies working in the Central London area earn a gross salary of
around £550-£700 per week if employed on a live-out basis, with these figures
dropping to around £450-£550 per week for live-in positions where accomodation
is provided. Their counterparts working in other areas of UK earn considerably
less, with average salaries of around £450-£550 for live-out positions and
£350-£450 for live-in positions (gross) respectively. Apart from geographical
location and live-in/live-out basis, the rate offered should depend on the
experience and qualifications of the nanny.
-
For part-time positions in the Central London area, you should consider
offering an hourly salary in the region of £10-£14 (net) per hour, with a fair
rate for equivalent positions in other areas being around £6-£10 (net) per
hour. Apart from geographical location, the rate should depend on the
experience and qualifications of the nanny, as well as the number of hours per
week you require them to work. The less hours per week that they will be
working, the greater the hourly rate should be to compensate fairly for this.
-
Occasional baby-sitting by your nanny should be remunerated at roughly the same
part-time hourly rates given above, provided that fair notice is given to the
nanny to allow them to clear their schedule.
-
Younger, less-qualified "mother's help" candidates are usually paid around
£50-£60 per week at age 16, increasing to about £120-£180 for older candidates
with greater experience.
Should you be able to offer any special benefits such as accomodation (for a
live-in position), use of a family's car, phone, meals or snacks etc, you
should negotiate with the nanny to account for these when determining a fair
salary.
A nanny's salary is usually paid either weekly or monthly, but if necessary
another arrangement can be made by agreement with the nanny.
